Senior Officers and Company Staff

The Master

Captain T.C. Jewell FEI MNI

Captain Terence Jewell has been actively involved with the shipping and oil industry for a period of some 40 years, up to his retirement from Shell U.K. Oil at the age of 55 years.  He is married with four daughters. His career has been interesting and varied.  He went to sea as an indentured apprentice at the age of 16 with the Hain Steamship Company, a part of the P.O. Group. Over the next 14 years at sea he obtained his Masters certificate, served as Chief Officer obtained a short command and then came ashore to join the family Engineering business. After a period of four years in the family business, he completed operational management training with Shell Mex and B.P. Ltd and in due course rose to the position of Oil Terminal Manager. At the de-merge of Shell Mex and B.P. Ltd into the separate companies of Shell U.K. Oil and B.P. Oil, he was appointed to Shell U.K. Oil and was posted to a large group terminal with it’s three satellite terminals, as Operations Planning Manager, responsible for the safe operational movement of some two million tons of mixed products a year throughout the South East of England.   During this period of time he was also involved in the safety audits of various terminals and the oil production rigs Alpha, Bravo and Charlie in the North Sea. After four years at the group terminal Captain Jewell was seconded to Shell International Petroleum Company and was posted to Nigeria again as an Operations Planning Manager with the National Oil and Chemical Company, the marketing and distribution arm of Shell, having responsibility for the inspection and safe operation of all shore based plant throughout Nigeria in the distribution and sales sector. This secondment to Nigeria lasted for some five years and during this period he became involved in Lagos Yacht Club and was the Vice Commodore for two years. The next move was to Ghana as the Operations Manager a slightly different role, now responsible for the overall efficient operational aspect of the Company there.  On completion of five years in Ghana, he retired from Shell U.K. Oil. On retirement Captain Jewell, with his wife Anne, went off sailing for 8 years in their 46 foot sloop, initially around the Mediterranean.   In 1995 they sailed the Atlantic to spend three years in the Caribbean, eventually selling the vessel in Venezuela. The following year he sailed the vessel back from Venezuela to Gibraltar with the new owner. His next little escapade was to sail the Atlantic again, this time with his daughter and son-in-law together with son-in-law’s brother making a crew of four on a 39 foot yacht.  Captain Jewell joined the Honourable Company of Master Mariners in 1980 and on his return to the U.K. re-activated his involvement with the Honourable Company, initially acting as Honorary Marine Superintendent, then subsequently as the WELLINGTON Trust Marine Superintendent. He was elected a Warden in 2007 (continuing in his role as WELLINGTON Trust Marine Superintendent) and for 2010/2011 as Senior Warden.

Immediate Past Master

Captain Graham Pepper, Master Mariner, FNI, was born into a Royal Navy family and has spent all his working life in the merchant shipping industry. Having trained at the Reardon Smith Nautical College in Cardiff, he was indentured to the Shaw Savill & Albion Company of London staying with them (and their parent company, Furness Withy) for over 35 years until the end of 2000. Initially serving in refrigerated cargo ships trading from the United Kingdom to New Zealand and Australia, he also served in passenger ships, mini bulk carriers and container ships. Sea service was interspersed with secondment to shore-based appointments in the West Indies, New Zealand and London before finally swallowing the anchor and coming ashore in 1986.

An appointment as Furness Withy’s Marine Services Manager saw Captain Pepper gain experience in the completely new field to him of managing the department sourcing and purchasing all supplies for Furness Withy ships. Additionally, the job included working with the Soviet company, CTC Cruises, where Furness Withy provided stores and catering advice as well as on-board services for passengers such as shops, casino, bar management, photography and hairdressing. It was a fascinating time and involved sailing in Soviet cruise ships as well as visiting the collapsing Soviet Union several times in the late 1980s. In 1992, he went back to marine operations with Furness Withy with appointments in Liverpool, Felixstowe and London, the last of which was as Operations Manager for a joint-venture refrigerated shipping company. Unfortunately, this was terminated when one of the partners withdrew and Captain Pepper became a self-employed marine consultant specialising in quality management systems. An invitation to revise a standard text book for the Merchant Navy led to the publication of the latest edition of “Thomas’ Stowage”, a guide to the stowage of cargo in ships, in 2008 and he is now working on the next revision.  Captain Pepper is a director of Dole (UK) Ltd, a Younger Brother of Trinity House and a Fellow of the Nautical Institute. He has been a Freeman of the Honourable Company since 1980 and a Liveryman since 1986, joining the Court in the following year. Elected a Warden in 1992, he served as Master for 1999/2000 and has now embarked on his second term of office. His interests include ornithology and shipping history, particularly that of individual companies. He and his wife, Isobel, also an ex-seafarer, live in rural Essex.
