Activities
The Honourable Company has a strong commitment to the professional standards of the maritime industry. To this end, the Honourable Company’s technical committee takes a very active role. We are available for free consultations on any matter relating to the technical and professional activities of the industry and will keep an overwatch on the industry and comment on areas of interest.
We are able to undertake this role due to the significant knowledge base of our members. All full members hold, as a minimum, the highest certificate of competency, a Class 1 foreign going Master Mariner’s or equivalent if they served in the Royal Navy. This “basic” knowledge is further enhanced by their experience working onboard ships and, in many cases, ashore. This represents an enormous stock of knowledge and experience which is consulted on a regular basis by outside authorities.
We have provided oral evidence to the Transport Select Committee, lobbied on behalf of seafarers who have been imprisoned, generated guidelines on many issues and contribute a whole range of committees within the industry. Additionally, the Honourable Company provides expert members for specific roles within the maritime industry. These include:
- Associate Parliamentary Maritime Group
- Nautical Assessors for the Court of Appeal
- Maritime and Coastguard Committees
- UK Safety of Navigation Committee
- Maritime Navigation Equipment Committee
- Human Element Advisory Group
- Certificates of Equivalent Competency
- CHIRP advisory body
- SeaVision Core Group
- SeaVision Education and Training Committee
- Lloyd’s Register Technical Committee
- Livery Companies Skills Council
- City University MSc in Marine Operations and Management body
- Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK
- Royal Institute of Navigation liaison
- Royal Navy liaison
The Honourable Company is a voice of first reference in the maritime community.

The education and training of future seafarers is regarded within the Honourable Company as one of our most vital roles. There is a strategic interest in ensuring that there are enough people trained to the very highest standards who can occupy positions within the maritime industry. We are an island nation that requires trade to come in by sea, and this means that we will always have a need for seafarers.
The Honourable Company supports the training and education of seafarers in a number of practical and positive ways.
The Apprenticeship Scheme:
The HCMM, in keeping with livery company traditions, runs a traditional apprenticeship scheme. Cadets, midshipmen and junior officers under training from both the Merchant and Royal Navies may apply or be recommended to join the scheme. If they are under 21 then they become apprentices and have their indentures registered with Mansion House. If they are over 21 then they join as junior associates. However, in all practical means they follow the same procedures.
They apply by sending in an application form which is placed before the Education and Training Committee. The committee then reviews the applicant’s details to ensure that they are eligible to join and then look to allocate the applicant a mentor. There are often requests for a mentor to come from a particular background, company or geographical location. Further, applicants often know of a particular master who they would like to serve under. In any event we attempt to match the mentor and applicant in the best way possible.
The applicant and mentor then attend the declaration ceremony where both commit to the scheme. After that, the apprentice then keeps in regular contact with their master, (at least once a month) and they meet face to face at least once a year. The arrangement continues until the apprentice gains their own master’s certificate and is then eligible to join the HCMM as a full member. During this time, the master is available to provide guidance and support for their apprentice in all matters relating to their professional studies as well as providing advice as to future career options.
The scheme has proved to be a great success for both masters and apprentices. We have a constant stream of people applying to join the scheme and so are always on the lookout for new masters to volunteer to be mentors.
London Cadet Officer Scholarship:
In addition to supporting the training of cadets in the apprenticeship scheme, the HCMM also provides financial support to the London Cadet Officer Scholarship. This provides funds to employ cadets and is a unique opportunity for 16 to 23 year olds to receive a fully paid for three year training course as an officer in the merchant navy.
